It's so crazy how life is such a roller coaster...it literally is up and down. The past week or so has been up! So much has happened that has been such a blessing:
1. Cruise started Occupational Therapy again and it is, of course, going very well. Angela is the world's best OT. Right now we are working on social stories and emotions.
2. I spent an entire day (again) trying to figure out how to get Cruise diagnosed. Then all of a sudden it hit me: why doesn't Cruise have Medicaid? So I called them up and sat on hold for almost an hour. Luckily I got the sweetest lady. I explained everything to her about our lack of income and Cruise's condition. So she instantly canceled CHIP and added Cruise on to Medicaid.
3. Now that Cruise has Medicaid, his much needed services like OT, Speech, and a diagnosis will all be covered!!!
4. We had a meeting with Kids On The Move this week about their brand new Pre-School program. They are just starting out which means no waiting list and a really great deal on tuition. We have signed Cruise up for this year and we are ecstatic! It's a program specifically for children with Autism and it caters to every child's needs. So Cruise will be going to his public school 2x a week (this class focuses on speech) and to his private school 2x a week (this class focuses on everything else). I feel so blessed and overjoyed that he will be able to attend the special pre-school...thank you Mom and Dad for paying his tuition, I don't think you really know just how much this means to me.
5. On Friday, we all drove up to Highland to an amazing place called Courage Reins, a therapeutic horse riding facility. Before leaving, we grabbed Cruise's white toy horse to explain to him that we'd be going to see horses. He held the horse all the way to Courage Reins.
The moment I stepped out of the car, I knew this place was special. There was a calm, warm feeling about it, and I knew this was an important place.
The intake interview was mostly questions about Cruise and his special needs. We went over the forms I had previously filled out and took care of all the information that was needed. Then it was time for Cruise to try out a horse.
They first picked out a helmet and fit it on him. He wasn't bothered and he held his toy horse as he said excitedly, "Horse!"
They led him out to meet his horse, Hella. A huge smile crept to his face as he pet the white beauty. He was in Heaven.
They led him back inside to meet Hella in the indoor riding arena. Again he said, "Horse!" They brought Hella over and sat Cruise on her. He sat for a few minutes to get comfortable. He was calm and relaxed. The trainers/therapists prompted Cruise to say, "Go!" to the horse, but he just smiled. They instructed Hella to go, and she walked along with Cruise on her back and trainers on each side. Cruise kept glancing back to make sure we were still there.
As I watched him, it was as if I could actually see all his disabilities, all disorders, peel off of him, leaving my little boy on the horse. Happy, calm, and aware. It wasn't Cruise with SPD, or Cruise with autism, or Cruise with speech delay. It was simply Cruise. My Cruise. And then all I could do was cry.
He finally pointed straight ahead and yelled, "Go!" And Hella went. After a bit, the trainers prompted him to practice saying "stop", but why would he want to stop? So he yelled, "GO!"
As his riding time came to an end, they prompted Cruise to tell Hella to stop accompanied by the sign. He did this with ease and confidence, and Hella stopped. I thought Cruise would have a meltdown as they helped him off of the horse, but he remained content. He pet Hella as if to say, "thank you," and returned to Dave and I, happier than ever. It all felt like a beautiful dream.
This place is amazing and makes it extremely affordable for the families. So we signed him up for fall quarter and he will be going once a week for an hour.
I really feel so blessed. I sometimes forget that I don't have to do this all on my own. But when things like these happen, I am reminded that my Heavenly Father is so aware of me, my family, and especially Cruise. The Lord always finds a way to provide what you need as long as you are doing all you can and all you should.
